It’s been quite some time since I made anything that required sizing; double the difficulty without a way to test fit. Some things aren’t worth overthinking – you just have to hurtle yourself into it Wile E Coyote style, so that by the time gravity catches up, you’re in too deep to quit. And remember that quilting uses a 1/4″ sa but apparel needs at least 1/2″.
It’s supposed to be a powersuit, so it needs density and stability. The munchkin wears a size 5, but sewing patterns tend toward the small. Used Simplicity 1786-B size 7 as a base, drafted a new bottom curve, relocated some seams, and added side panels. Started with Soft & Stable foam in cotton muslin and stay-stitched at 5/8″ to prevent rolling. If it doesn’t fit, at least I’ll know which measurements need to change.
Since I was already improvising muslin hem tape for the bottom of the front, seemed like a good time to try some piping. Circles remain my kryptonite, but that’s what fumble-throughs are for. Also to remind you to tack the end of the cord in place so you don’t end up with an absurdly long empty piping tube that serves no purpose.
Regretting the black fabric choice. I know better than to buy blind and this one bit me; too thin and too brittle. Every needle mark is a crater – no disguising that. Worse, Jinx is long overdue for a tune up and has started dropping stitches. I know I should take him in, but I need to start another EPP project first or it’ll make me crazy the whole time he’s gone.
Take two. This time I applied the front and back designs applique style. Added piping to the bottom edges, and cut side panels for hook-n-loop tape.
With the bottom and side seams sealed, went back to the foam, which actually fit. I know, shocked me too. Quilted through all layers to prevent the foam from shifting and ordered more black hook-and-loop tape to allow as much variation in fit as possible.
Once the third column is in place, can seal the neckline and add the LEDs. Its hardly perfect, but it’s pretty stinkin cute. After all the years of Zaboomafoo, was good for the soul to learn the Kratt brothers are still teaching the creatures. They look a lot more like Mr Rogers these days.
And my circles are still awful. I see many practice exercises in my future. Drunkard’s path was easier than this shit. Do have some tentacles that need pebbling…
I have never in my life been so happy to buy soap.
